Carbon Project Releases Gaia 3.1 with Enhanced NSDI Support

ALEXANDRIA, VA, December 4, 2007 – The Carbon Project announces the release of a new version of its free Gaia software, Gaia 3.1 Beta 2, as part of the 2007 National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Cooperative Agreement Program (CAP). Gaia 3.1 is a free Windows application for accessing, visualizing and sharing location content, including the latest NSDI Framework Data services.

Gaia 3.1 Beta 2 may be downloaded at no cost from http://www.thecarbonproject.com/gaia.php.

"More and more Framework data is becoming available through the NSDI as Web Feature Services (WFS), and applications are needed to interact with these online resources. Gaia 3.1 provides a highly usable solution for organizations that need to access Framework data and combine it with their own information resources,” stated Doug Nebert, NSDI Clearinghouse Coordinator and Information Architect.

Gaia 3.1 lets you seamlessly access and use a vast array of location content and services from your Windows desktop – including OGC GML, GMLsf, ESRI Shapefiles, OGC WMS, WFS, WCS services, Filter Encodings, Microsoft Virtual Earth, Yahoo! Maps, KML/KMZ, and more. “This latest release, Gaia 3.1 Beta 2, includes enhancements to maximize usability of NSDI WFS including increased support for WFS technology from multiple vendors, enhanced GML parsers and new Filter Builder tools that make it easy to use WFS in a distributed environment,” said Jeff Harrison, President and CEO of The Carbon Project.

The project to develop Gaia 3.1, called “Framework NSDI and Beyond”, is a collaborative effort between the North Carolina Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources (NC DENR), the City of Charlotte, NC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), CubeWerx, The Carbon Project and the geoLeaders Network. The NSDI Cooperative Agreements Program was established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) to help form partnerships among organizations to implement the NSDI.
